Could/was able to/could have doneの違い

Could 習慣的能力があった
was able to することができて実際にやった
could have done やろうと思えばできたがしなかった

He could run very fast when he was young.
I was able to pass the exam although it was difficult. (I could pass the exam although it was difficult.とは言えない)
When I went on a business trip to Tokyo, I could have stayed with one of my friends there, but I put up at a hotel.
